’A carbon fiber phone is impossible’

Since day one, this is a comment we’ve faced from industry insiders and competitors.

The reality is, on paper, they have a point.

Despite its advanced properties for creating robust yet lightweight structures, carbon fiber is also an electromagnetic conductor. This means that it has a nasty habit of blocking radio signals, something pretty vital for smartphones. To be scientifically specific, it creates a Faraday cage where rather than allowing signals through, it disperses them around the outer casing.

The effect is a lot like trying to make a call in an elevator.

To create a carbon-fiber phone, we had to go further than anyone else has before to find new answers.

After years of intense research and development, we developed HyRECM Technology.
HyRECM stands for Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material.

For the first time, we have created a revolutionary process that forges carbon fiber with a complementary composite material with signal allowing properties. The result is a carbon-fiber based monocoque structure that is incredibly thin, light and completely connected.

Were these problems the reason for the two-year delay in the project?

The actual invention of HyRECM Technology came early in the development process to solve the problem of carbon fiber blocking radio signals. The Carbon 1 MK I concept was a working smartphone for example. With this validating the technology and the customer demand represented by the growth of our community, the greatest challenge then started to build a truly disruptive company around our first device.

The time between our first communications and the Carbon 1 MK II coming to market has been caused by a multitude of factors. We needed to find investment, develop the right team and source the right production partners to support the project. All of these elements took a significant amount of time to finalise but vital to get right before we launch.

Since we announced in February 2020 the phone would be coming this year, of course new unavoidable factors have hindered our progress.

Back to the HyRECM specifically though; over time we have continually tested new materials and means to bond the composite materials together. This latest version of HyRECM Technology that is built into the Carbon 1 MK II is a significant step forward. It is quicker and easier to produce at a larger scale and with stronger bonds between the composite materials, it makes a more robust carbon fiber based monocoque.

Hats off to CARBON, it’s R&D and Its FOUNDER to come up with a patented technology to a barriered problem. This solution looks like future to me in lot of applications… looking at properties of composite Carbonfibre and blended to transmit and receive radio signals is headed in direction of space technology is what I feel. And to own a smart phone with such technology is being rit on TOP.

Dear Mr. Khalifeh, which SAR-rating will Carbon 1 MK II have & how does the material itself affect to it for example keeping this rating low?

Just to make sure I understand right: HyRECM is only used on top & bottom of the phone and between there‘s some „standard“ carbon fiber or does the whole monocoque consist of it ?

Yes, indeed. Solving the antenna and radio in Carbon Fiber and composites is indeed a cutting edge technology, done for the first time.
We are using space-graded Carbon Fiber, from one of the top suppliers in the world.
We are so proud of that.

Our patented HyRECM technology forges the carbon fiber core of the body with a complementary re-inforced composite at the top and bottom to create a single monocoque design.

The visible Carbon Fiber that you see, is where the actual carbon fiber is.

But actually, HyRECM is a complete solution design for a smartphone using Carbon Fiber.
Including, mechanical, integrity, antenna and radio, grounding, etc…All of that has been done differently than aluminum and plastic.

Is it a common practice to use 3 antennas or is it specifically needed to ensure the radio reception ?

I found an article where the usage of glass-fiber for HyRECM is mentioned & I was wondering if you‘re planning to assemble some kind of bio based glass fiber for carbon 1 or products in the future.

usually you have 3 antennas or more.

  • we got Main antenna at the bottom.
  • on the top: Diversity antenna on one side | GPS/Bluetooth/WIFI on the other side.

This really leads into the conversation we have been having on the other thread regarding a ‘Green Carbon Smartphone.’
We are exploring the many avenues for how to build a robust, super-lightweight body of a carbon fiber smartphone from the sustainable resources that will reshape the electronics industry.

Without giving too much away, there are 2 routes.

  1. Green HyRECM Technology: Implementing bio-based sources of carbon fibers and RF(Radio) transparent materials. This includes carbon fibers sourced from carbon capture (Carbon negative).
  2. Green Fibers Smartphone: Exploring the incredible new technologies that create ‘carbon-fiber like’ materials from biosources aka NFC (natural-Fiber Composites). This technology would enable the creation of one continuous body that would not block radio signals. it’s possible to have the a 100% NCF smartphone. and also in combination with Carbon Fiber.

Regarding the headphones: will they be built completely out of HYRECM ?

Besides the fact that this new material enables signal radiation: what other differences are there between HyRECM and Carbon or other materials ? Is it even lighter, more stable, easier to be shaped ? What about recycling it ? Are you planning to create products completely made out of it or would the manufacturing process be too expensive ?
