We are really excited and ready for 2021. At the moment development is in a great place and we are truly in the final days of production.
It is important to say we have a constant eye on the Covid-19 situation and how it is evolving here and especially in Asia. We have seen that some cities and production lines have been affected already but right now, Hong Kong and Shenzhen where our partners are based - everything looks to be OK, and no signals to impact Founder Edition production.
In the meantime, the Carbon Team at least got a Christmas present!
Since the 20th of December, the DVT#2 test devices made their way to Berlin and the team has been trialing them. Over the last 2 weeks, we have been keeping an eye on bugs and installing regular updates.
We caught up with Firas yesterday for a break in a very busy schedule to record an update. Watch here (Summary below the video).
SUMMARY:
DVT #2.5 Successful: At the end of 2020, 10 devices were assembled to test a new fingerprint sensor and supporting body. The new fingerprint sensor is super slim and the functionality is even better than the previous iteration. The real positive result here is that it allows for more structural support around the sensor and that area of the phone is now even 4 x stronger than before.
Team Testing & Partner Review: The DVT#2 devices (including the old fingerprint sensor), have made their way to Berlin. The team has been testing the device and really impressed with the overall functionality and performance. We have been touring the device with distribution and retail partners who will help get the device in stores and they are very impressed with the progress and the look and feel of the device.
Software Bugs: Core functionality is great and the team has been using the phone as their primary device since 20th Dec. As is normal at this stage, the team in their testing is finding bugs to be resolved. These are minor and updates are happening regularly to get the phone launch-ready.
Camera Tuning: This is a constantly evolving aspect of software development. The camera is working very well and for the average user itâs a great camera. The bar is set very high for cameras now and we are constantly testing, tuning, and updating to get the most out of the camera ready for Founder Editions. We have some photographers on the team and looking to get some example shots in the next few weeks to share.
Assembly and Delivery: With the green light for the new bodies and fingerprint sensors, orders have been made with suppliers. We expect components to arrive early next week with the assembly line booked for 14-15 Jan. Delivery to Berlin is planned for 3rd week of Jan with distribution shortly after.
Founders Stand-By: We have a new app created which will feature on all devices ready to gather feedback. When we have 100% confirmation on the delivery date, you will be informed of the actions you need to take and how you will get involved.

DVT #2.5 erfolgreich: Ende 2020 wurden 10 GerĂ€te zusammengebaut, um einen neuen Fingerabdrucksensor und TrĂ€gerkörper zu testen. Der neue Fingerabdrucksensor ist superschlank und die FunktionalitĂ€t ist noch besser als bei der vorherigen Iteration. Das Team hat das GerÀt getestet und ist wirklich beeindruckt von der allgemeinen FunktionalitÀt und Leistung. Wir haben das GerÀt mit Vertriebs- und Einzelhandelspartnern besichtigt, die uns dabei helfen werden, das GerÀt in die LÀden zu bringen, und sie sind sehr beeindruckt von den Fortschritten und dem Aussehen des GerÀts.
Software Bugs: Die KernfunktionalitĂ€t ist groĂartig und das Team nutzt das Telefon seit dem 20. Dezember als HauptgerĂ€t. Wie in dieser Phase ĂŒblich, findet das Team bei seinen Tests Fehler, die behoben werden mĂŒssen. Diese sind jedoch geringfĂŒgig und es werden regelmĂ€Ăig Updates durchgefĂŒhrt, um das Telefon zur Marktreife zu bringen.
Kamera-Tuning: Dies ist ein sich stĂ€ndig weiterentwickelnder Aspekt der Softwareentwicklung. Die Kamera funktioniert sehr gut und fĂŒr den Durchschnittsnutzer ist es eine tolle Kamera. Die Messlatte fĂŒr Kameras liegt jetzt sehr hoch und wir testen, tunen und aktualisieren stĂ€ndig, um das Beste aus der Kamera fĂŒr die Founder Editions herauszuholen. Wir haben einige Fotografen im Team und hoffen, dass wir in den nĂ€chsten Wochen ein paar Beispielfotos machen können, um sie zu teilen.
Montage und Auslieferung: Nachdem wir grĂŒnes Licht fĂŒr die neuen GehĂ€use und Fingerabdrucksensoren bekommen haben, wurden die Bestellungen bei den Lieferanten getĂ€tigt. Wir erwarten, dass die Komponenten Anfang nĂ€chster Woche eintreffen und die Montagelinie fĂŒr den 14. und 15. Januar gebucht ist. Die Lieferung nach Berlin ist fĂŒr die 3. Januarwoche geplant, die Auslieferung and die Einzelhandelspartner erfolgt kurz danach.
